Ambling African Women
What is the Ambling African Women Group?
Ambling African Women is a Suffolk-based walking and wellbeing community that brings women together through a shared love of nature, movement, and connection.
Founded to inspire more women to explore and embrace the outdoors, our group creates opportunities to discover Suffolk’s beautiful countryside while building friendships, supporting wellbeing, and fostering a sense of community. Through our regular walks and outdoor activities, we encourage women to step outside, connect with nature, and enjoy the many benefits that come from spending time outdoors with others.
While our roots celebrate African women and their experiences, our walks are open to all women who value inclusion, community, and wellbeing. Whether you’re an experienced walker or simply looking for a welcoming group to explore with, Ambling African Women offers a supportive space to connect, belong, and thrive.
Why does this group matter?
For many Black and minoritised women, access to outdoor spaces has not always felt equal or inclusive. Representation in the countryside and outdoor recreation remains limited, and many women may not see themselves reflected in these spaces.
Ambling African Women was created to help change that and encourage more women to embrace the outdoors in community.
We believe everyone should feel welcome exploring nature and enjoying the physical and mental health benefits that come with spending time outdoors. By walking together, we increase visibility, challenge perceptions and beliefs about who belongs in the countryside, and create spaces where women can feel safe, supported, and connected.
Walking as a group offers benefits that extend beyond physical exercise:
- Improves physical health and overall wellbeing.
- Reduces stress and supports positive mental health.
- Builds confidence in exploring new outdoor spaces.
- Creates opportunities for friendship and social connection.
- Reduces isolation and strengthens community ties.
- Encourages representation and visibility in the outdoors.
- Inspires more women from diverse backgrounds to engage with nature.
At its heart, Ambling African Women is about community, wellbeing, representation, and reclaiming the simple joy of being outdoors together.
